Three by Sean Baker
The Hi-Pointe spotlights the fiercely independent filmmaker Sean Baker, who has spent over two decades creating authentic stories about society’s overlooked margins. In addition to screening Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning romance Anora, premiering on November 22 in 35mm, we’re also featuring two of his most acclaimed films: The Florida Project and Tangerine.
Three by Robert Bresson
The films of Robert Bresson stand as singular achievements in the history of cinema, celebrated for their austerity, spiritual depth, and rigorous formal style. This series features three pivotal works from different phases of Bresson’s career, each reflecting his evolving vision of human struggle and transcendence.
The early masterpiece A Man Escaped (1956) is a taut and profoundly meditative prison escape drama based on a true story, blending suspense with spiritual allegory. Later, Lancelot du lac (1974) reimagines the Arthurian legend with brutal realism and a stark exploration of failure, disillusionment, and honor. Finally, The Devil, Probably (1977) captures the existential despair of youth in a fractured modern world, offering a haunting critique of contemporary society’s moral and ecological decay.
Together, these films showcase Bresson’s distinctive approach to cinema as an art of transcendence, minimalism, and moral inquiry.
