From Academy Award-winning director Paweł Pawlikowski (Ida, Cold War) comes a haunting postwar road movie about memory, guilt, and reconciliation. In the summer of 1949, Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika return to Germany for the first time since fleeing the Nazis sixteen years earlier. Traveling from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar through a nation left in ruins, father and daughter confront not only a fractured homeland but also the unresolved wounds within their own family. Shot in luminous black and white, Fatherland is a deeply moving meditation on exile, identity, and the moral reckoning of postwar Europe.

“An impossibly elegant, poised historical vignette whose brevity and control can hardly contain its characters’ personal and historical pain.”
— Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“Fatherland is an elegant, engrossing film… chilly at times, but also poignant.”
— Phil de Semlyen, Time Out

“A model of economy… almost casually demonstrating intelligence and cinematic beauty.”
— Nicolas Rapold, Sight & Sound
