Wilder Times
One of classical Hollywood’s greatest directors – and arguably its finest screenwriter – Billy Wilder was responsible for an astonishing run of iconic, Oscar-laureled films. From July-December, the Hi-Pointe Theatre will offer 14 of the director’s works in the series Wilder Times, with the films each screening twice. Cliff Froehlich, Cinema St. Louis’ retired executive director, will introduce and lead post-film discussions at the 1 p.m. Thursday matinees for six of the films: Double Indemnity (July 9), Sunset Boulevard (Aug. 13), Ace in the Hole (Sept. 10), Some Like It Hot (Oct. 8), The Apartment (Nov. 19), and One, Two, Three (Dec. 10). Those screenings are offered through St. Louis Oasis, which provides older adults with opportunities for lifelong learning. In addition, Froehlich will participate in the evening presentation of The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes on July 23. The other seven films in the series are The Lost Weekend, Sabrina, The Seven Year Itch, Witness for the Prosecution, Love in the Afternoon, Irma La Douce, and Kiss Me, Stupid.
