Frank and Lenore Davis are expecting their second child, but an ordinary trip to the maternity ward becomes a nightmare when Lenore gives birth to a horribly mutated infant. Frightened, extraordinarily strong, and lethally defensive, the newborn escapes from the hospital and disappears into Los Angeles, leaving a trail of bodies behind.

As the authorities launch a hunt to destroy the child, Frank struggles with shame and horror over what his son has become. But as he begins to understand that the infant kills primarily when frightened or threatened, his revulsion gives way to something more complicated: the instinct of a father to protect his child, no matter what that child may be.

Writer-director Larry Cohen turns an outrageous exploitation premise into a surprisingly affecting mixture of monster movie, family tragedy and social satire, with John P. Ryan and Sharon Farrell as the terrified parents, creature effects by Rick Baker, and an ominous score by legendary composer Bernard Herrmann. AFI confirms Cohen as writer, director and producer, Baker on makeup, and Herrmann as composer.
