It’s spring break at Lake Victoria, and thousands of college students have descended on the water for a weekend of sun, booze and nonstop partying. But when an underwater earthquake tears open a subterranean cavern beneath the lake, it releases something that has been trapped there for millions of years: a ravenous school of prehistoric piranhas.

As the creatures begin feeding, Sheriff Julie Forester (Elisabeth Shue) races to clear the lake while her teenage son Jake (Steven R. McQueen) finds himself stranded on the water. What follows is an increasingly outrageous feeding frenzy of blood, severed limbs, bikini-clad spring breakers and gloriously excessive 3D mayhem.

Director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes) embraces the anything-goes spirit of exploitation cinema, turning the killer-fish movie into an unapologetically excessive mixture of horror, comedy and splatter spectacle. The cast also includes Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Jerry O’Connell, Christopher Lloyd, and—in a wonderfully knowing nod to Jaws—Richard Dreyfuss.
