Brilliant but eccentric scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) believes he has perfected a revolutionary teleportation system capable of transporting matter instantaneously between two “telepods.” While documenting his experiments, journalist Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis) becomes both his observer and lover. But when Brundle impulsively tests the machine on himself, he fails to notice that a common housefly has entered the pod with him.

At first, the experiment seems to have improved him, giving Brundle extraordinary strength, energy and confidence. Soon, however, disturbing physical and psychological changes reveal what actually happened: the computer fused Brundle and the fly at the genetic level. As his transformation accelerates, Veronica watches the man she loves gradually disappear into something horrifyingly new.
